Overview

The Cho La Pass trek is one of the most popular high mountain pass treks in the Everest region of Nepal. The trek leads to Everest Base Camp via the Cho La Pass, which lies at an altitude of 5,420 meters. The Cho La Pass is the middle of the three high passes in the region and connects the Gokyo Valley with Everest Base Camp. Most people preferred to cross the Cho La Pass via the Gokyo Valley. The Cho La Pass trek is considered a challenging trek that involves steep ascents and descents, glacier walking, and crossing rocky terrain. It is important to acclimatize properly and choose a gradual ascent to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. The Cho la Pass trekking route leads to two important trekking destinations in the Everest region: the pristine Gokyo Lakes and the famous Everest Base Camp.

The trekking route leads into the circuit and passes the most attractive places: Gokyo Lakes, Gokyo Ri, Cho La Pass, Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. It is also possible to cross the Cho La Pass after going to Everest Base Camp, but very few people select this route. The Cho La Pass trek usually begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small airstrip in the Everest region. From Lukla you will start your trek towards Namche Bazaar, a lively Sherpa town and an important trading center in the region.

The trail to Gokyo is a gradual climb up a valley, passing through patches of birch and rhododendron forest, where the elusive musk deer can sometimes be seen. Through small yak-grazing settlements, you reach the main Gokyo Lake from where you climb to the Gokyo Ri peak (5,357 m) and enjoy stunning summit mountain views including Everest, Makalu, and Cho Oyo.

After enjoying the view from the top of Gokyo Ri, you will return to Gokyo and continue your trek along the Ngozumpa Glacier over rocky terrain. You will reach Thangna, a small settlement at the foot of Cho La Pass. Cho La Pass is not difficult in itself, but it is steep and involves a glacier crossing. You have to be careful because the path is vertical, and the rocks covered with ice make the trekking path slippery.

After the Cho La pass, you reach Dzongla. The views of Ama Dablam and Taweche are spectacular. After Dzongla, you proceed to Gorak Shep and then climb to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and Kala Patthar (5,545 m) from where you enjoy an impressive close-up view of Everest.

Our return route passes through Tengboche, a spectacular place with a charming monastery, where you relax and savor the incredible scenery, which includes Everest (8,848 m), Ama Dablam (6,856 m), Kantega (6,809 m), Kwangde (6,194 m), Nuptse (7,879 m), Lhotse (8,511 m), and many other peaks.

Our Cho La Pass trekking plan below takes you first to Gokyo Lake and Cho La Pass, then to Everest Base Camp (EBC) and up to Kala Patthar, which is a common trekking route. It is also possible to go counter-clockwise first to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar, then cross the Cho La Pass (5,420 m) and go to the Gokyo Valley.

Our 19-day Cho La Pass trekking package includes 14 days of trekking (or 15 days from Kathmandu), one day for sightseeing, and one rest day in Kathmandu. Additionally, it allows for two days for arrival and departure from Kathmandu.
